The international effort to clean the Great Pacific Garbage Patch has reached a remarkable milestone: 50% of the accumulated plastic waste has been successfully removed.
A fleet of 200 autonomous cleanup vessels, powered by solar and wave energy, has been operating continuously for the past three years. The technology uses:
More than 40,000 tons of plastic have been removed so far. The collected materials are being recycled into construction materials, clothing, and new vessel components.
"This proves that environmental restoration at scale is possible when technology and international cooperation align," said the project director.
The initiative, funded by a coalition of 30 nations and major tech companies, aims to complete the cleanup by 2029.
